A Historic Dive in Dominica
The world of competitive freediving witnessed another historic moment this Monday as Ukrainian champion Kateryna Sadurska shattered her own world record. Competing at the Blue Element 2025 tournament in Dominica, Sadurska successfully completed a dive to 86 meters (282 feet) without the use of oxygen or fins. This achievement in the Constant Weight No Fins (CNF) discipline marks the eighth world record the athlete has secured since 2023, further cementing her legacy in the sport.
Sadurska, a former Olympic artistic swimmer, managed to surpass her previous benchmark by two meters. The feat took place against the backdrop of Dominica, a Caribbean island nation known for its mountainous terrain, tropical forests, and natural hot springs. With a population of just 67,000, the island has become a premier destination for elite divers seeking to push the limits of human endurance in the deep blue.
Commercial Developments in the Mediterranean
While international athletes push physical boundaries in the Caribbean, the recreational diving industry is seeing administrative movement in Southern Europe. In Spain, a new opportunity for maritime tourism is currently under review in the municipality of Níjar. The Territorial Delegation for Sustainability, Environment, and Blue Economy in Almería has officially opened a public information period regarding a request to utilize the maritime-terrestrial public domain.
The application, submitted by the commercial entity Buceo Cabo de Gata S.L., seeks authorization to conduct diving activities and coastal maritime excursions using motorboats. Established in 2016 and based in Níjar, the limited liability company is looking to secure a four-year permit to operate these tourist services within the region’s coastal waters.
Public Consultation Process
Following the publication of the notice in the Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía (BOJA) on November 20, a formal window for public feedback has been established. Authorities have set a timeline of 20 days for interested parties to submit any allegations or comments they consider relevant to the project.
During this period, all documentation related to the authorization file will be accessible for review. Residents and stakeholders can examine the details through the Active Publicity section of the administrative body, ensuring transparency before the potential approval of the diving and excursion operations.
