Online travel platform Agoda has released the results of its 2025 “Diving Deals” survey, offering new insights into the preferences and habits of scuba diving enthusiasts across Asia. The study was conducted across 11 key tourism markets in the region, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia.
According to the findings, Indonesia tops the list as the most popular diving destination in Asia. It is followed closely by the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. These countries are celebrated for their rich marine biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, and unique underwater landscapes, attracting divers from around the globe.
Among Vietnamese travelers, Thailand has emerged as the top choice for diving getaways. This preference is largely attributed to the country’s crystal-clear waters, diverse marine ecosystems, and globally recognized dive sites. Thailand continues to captivate Vietnamese divers with its tropical waters and well-developed diving infrastructure.
In addition to Thailand, other favorites among Vietnamese divers include Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. This growing interest underscores a wider trend of Vietnamese travelers seeking deeper connections with the ocean and a desire to explore marine wonders beyond their own borders.
The report also highlights that underwater relaxation remains a key reason why many people choose to dive. Around 30% of respondents said their main motivation for diving was to enjoy the peace and quiet of the open sea. This sentiment is especially common among travelers from the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Another major draw for diving enthusiasts is the opportunity to explore the fascinating underwater world. About 24% of those surveyed said they are motivated by the desire to witness the mystical beauty and ecological richness of marine environments. The allure of colorful coral gardens, vibrant sea life, and underwater caves continues to inspire a sense of adventure and curiosity among divers.
Interestingly, the survey found that while most divers look for budget-friendly accommodation, they are willing to spend significantly more on the actual diving experiences. Approximately 40% of respondents indicated they would pay between 15% and 30% more for a dive trip compared to a standard holiday. This demonstrates that for many, the quality of the diving experience outweighs other travel expenses.
Short trips are also gaining popularity among diving tourists. Nearly half of the participants (48%) prefer dive vacations lasting between four and seven days, suggesting a growing trend toward compact yet immersive getaways. Weekend diving escapes are also on the rise, with 40% of respondents opting for brief but fulfilling adventures that fit into their busy lives.
Coral reefs remain the most sought-after underwater destinations, with 75% of divers choosing reefs for their ocean explorations. The visual spectacle and ecological significance of coral reefs make them a favorite among both novice and experienced divers.
With its expansive marine biodiversity and dynamic reef systems, Asia continues to solidify its status as a must-visit destination for diving enthusiasts. Vietnam’s inclusion in the top five highlights its growing appeal as a world-class location for scuba diving, offering both natural beauty and increasingly accessible dive tourism services.
